NEW MEXICO DRIVERS LICENSE

Drivers license applicants:

Everyone eighteen through forty four years of age(including those 5 and older who have not had a license in the past ten years or who have been convicted of DWI) who is applying for a New Mexico driver's license shall submit evidence with his/her application that he/she has successfully completed a traffic safety approved DWI prevention and education program.

Individuals transferring an out of state CDL (commercial license) do not need to take the above class.

If you have never held a drivers license check with the local NMMVD for current requirements.

Persons with a valid out-of-state license applying for a New Mexico license will need to have your valid license, your social security card, and proof of insurance.

Legal driving age in NM is 15.

New Mexico does have and enforces a seat belt law.

Santa Fe has a "Hands Free" law, which means use of a cellphone while holding it in your hand is unlawful. Use of a head set is lawful. Various counties in New Mexico are adopting this practice.

MOTORCYCLES There are no helmet laws for motorcycles in New Mexico
